Don Ciccio & Figli Perla Negroni Bianco Oro
Italy’s Most Legendary Cocktail... With A Twist It’s amazing to think that just a decade ago, few people had heard of the Negroni, one of Italy’s greatest cocktail creations. Today, you’ll find them on the menu at just about every bar worth walking into. The original Negroni, with equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, is a variation on another drink called the Americano, which employed soda water instead of gin. The drink dates back to 1919, when Count Camillo Negroni asked for an Americano with gin instead of soda at the Caffe Casoni in Florence. It proved to be such a hit that the Negroni family, having named the cocktail after the count, started selling a bottled Negroni in Italy soon after.
Fast forward to a century or so, and bottled cocktails and Negronis are once again all the rage. Negronis have achieved such widespread popularity among the cocktail set that a host of variations, all of which play off the basic gin/bitters/vermouth recipe, have popped up around the globe. One of our favorites, which you’ll find in this very box, comes from Don Ciccio & Figli, a Washington, DC-based family-run company whose roots go back to Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Rather than the deep red of Campari, this Negroni — the Negroni Bianco Oro — is a bright golden yellow in color. That’s from Don Ciccio & Figli’s own Cinque Aperitivo Bianco, a bitter liqueur made with 12 herbs and roots, featuring dominant notes of bitter orange and gentian lutea. You’ll taste those flavors in the Negroni Bianco Oro as well. A mix of Cinque Aperitivo Bianco, Etesia gin, and white vermouth; it’s a bracing, refreshing, and delicious take on the traditional Negroni. Best of all, it’s as easy to prepare as it is to drink. Chill it in the fridge, pour it into a chilled rocks glass with or without ice, and stir for 30 seconds. If you’re feeling fancy, garnish with a twist of orange peel. And enjoy!
For the last decade, Don Ciccio & Figli has been introducing America to authentic Italian- style amari, aperitivos, liqueurs, and now their Perla line of ready-to-drink cocktails. Founder Francesco Amodeo can trace his family’s history in distilling back to 1883, when his great-grandparents created some of the recipes that are still used today in his products.
